Charter Kennel has three finalists in the $95,000 Wheeling Island National – two of them following much-needed victories in the fifth and final round Wednesday afternoon.

Representing the Dorothy Tober-trained Charter Kennel in the futurity-style championship will be Barts Im Joekool, Dont Let Me Down and Barts Send It. The Brad Boeckendstedt Kennel has a pair of finalists – BGR Dustybottoms and Superior Calder.

Kennels with a single entry in the stakes final are Konomi (A Ray), SG’s Arnie Army (Jacobs Racing) and WW Jimmythe Geek (Wayne Ward).

The championship and consolation finals will be held on Monday, May 29 (Memorial Day). The post position draw will be on Friday.

Charter Kennel’s Dont Let Me Down finished fourth and Barts Send It had an eighth in the fourth round – both needing winning efforts Wednesday to have a shot of making the final.

Both prevailed to secure their spot in the final. The other two fifth round winners were Konomi, victorious in the last two rounds, and Barts Im Joekool.

The field was cut to 32 greyhounds for the fourth round with points earned in the first three qualifiers dropped. Points accumulated in the fourth and fifth rounds determined the finalists.

The consolation final field has Nina Myers and Ban Chini (Steve Sarras), Starinthemaking and SG’s Bob Uecker (Jacobs Racing), JW Kit Kat (Patriot/Taplin), Cashontheline (Lester Raines), Superior Cannon (Brad Boeckenstedt) and Barts Wynn (Charter).

Capsule reviews of the fifth round races follow:

Favorite Konomi posted a box-to-wire 5 ½-length victory in 29.62. WW Jimmythe Geek and Barts Wynn rounded out the trifecta ticket.

Dont Let Me Down, sent to post at nearly 8-1, fired right to the front before holding off Cashontheline by a half length in 29.94. BGR Dustybottoms was third.

Another favorite, Barts Im Joekool, rolled to a box-to-wire 5 ½-length victory in 29.93. SG’s Arnie Army was second while JW Kit Kat got up for third.

Barts Send It, another betting choice, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in winning by 4 ½ lengths in 29.76. Superior Cannon was second while Starinthemaking closed from sixth in the stretch to complete the trifecta.

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately. Throughout the years, I have developed a deep passion for racing. In the mid 1990s, I started writing a weekly greyhound column and shortly thereafter became a writer for The Greyhound Review.

I have enjoyed watching and writing about these wonderful competitors, including All-Americans DD's Nelson, Kiowa Sweet Trey, Gene's Champion, WW Apple Jax, Greys Royalcrown, Nimby TP Jan, Hi Noon Hero, Gable Sour Cream, KB's Ruckus and Cry Case.
