Thursday, November 10, 2016

Two years ago Tri-State Greyhound Park kennel operator Patrick McMillon swept the top three spots in the final of the West Virginia Greyhound Owners and Breeders Association Sprint Stakes at Wheeling Island.

Mac’s Bonita captured the stake event while Mac’s Louisa and Mac’s Westcliff rounded out the trifecta ticket. The sprinters raced out of the A Ray Kennel at Wheeling.

This year, McMillon has brought a couple more big guns up to Wheeling from Tri-State – Mac’s Harewood and Mac’s Olympia – for the WVGOBA Sprint Stakes which begins Saturday afternoon, Nov. 12. Harewood has 26 wins and Olympia has 22 victories during the 2016 racing season.

While the two sprinters have lit up the Tri-State oval, several other talented Grade AA West Virginia-bred performers are among the 49 greyhounds entered in the stakes. The second round is planned for Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 16, and the semifinals during the Sunday matinee, Nov. 20, card.

The championship final will take place Friday afternoon, Nov. 25.

I was introduced to greyhound racing by a friend in the late 1970s at Wheeling Downs and fell in love with the sport and the athletes immediately. Throughout the years, I have developed a deep passion for racing. In the mid 1990s, I started writing a weekly greyhound column and shortly thereafter became a writer for The Greyhound Review.

I have enjoyed watching and writing about these wonderful competitors, including All-Americans DD's Nelson, Kiowa Sweet Trey, Gene's Champion, WW Apple Jax, Greys Royalcrown, Nimby TP Jan, Hi Noon Hero, Gable Sour Cream, KB's Ruckus and Cry Case.
