Chewie a Meet 'Sleeper'
Still another rags-to-riches story may be emerging from the NGA Spring Meet 2011.
Still another rags-to-riches story may be emerging from the NGA Spring Meet 2011.
SE's Chewie, who was purchased in the NGA Auction last April by Chris Palmieri from Steve Ward for $1,250, is tied as the leading point-earner and finalist in the Derby Lane Fall Juvenile, which goes to post on Saturday night, Nov. 12, at the St. Petersburg track.
Chewie, a February 2010 son of TNT Star Wars-Ozsum Flyby, finished fourth (last) after stumbling in his first race in the January Stake last spring. This qualified the pup for Thursday's Cooler Stake (i.e., best fourth-place finishers, time-wise, on Monday). Chewie finished sixth in that race after getting hit at the first turn. His two times at the Spring Meet were 31.28 and 32.21.
Chewie competed in the older January Stake of that meet, due to there being a shortage of entries for the February Stake, forcing its cancellation.
Several pups from the Spring Meet, including Derby Lane stake winner Craigie I Am Jak and Dubuque Stake winner Hug N Dodgem, have distinguished themselves after selling for unspectacular auction prices. SE's Chewie has emerged as the most recent among those.
