The quarter-finals of the 2012 Orange Park Derby is upon us on Friday evening January 27th at the Orange Park Kennel Club. Four races remain, and the action is hotter than ever. Snj Black Porter is the only undefeated greyhound left, but several others have been ok so close to keeping it perfect through two rounds. This will be another night of great racing, so don't miss out on the 7th, 9th, 11th, and 15th races on the card.
Race 7 should be a great race on the front end and it will be interesting to see if the speed holds or not. Lk's Energizing was run down last time out, but previous to that she has won 4 races in a row. She is the best early speeder in this bunch and will be untouched to the lead again, but will the lead be enough to win? Rochelle's Vine gets her best box here in the 1, and with all that closing speed, she is going to be a threat at the finish line. Miss Trent has broke well in back to back efforts and should press the pace from start to finish, and Ms Queen To U looks to close late and challenge from a tough post position. (3-1-6-7)
Race 9 is a rematch of greyhounds that finished 1 and 2 in their last race, but they need to be wary of a couple of added closers to the mix in this effort. Still Clever Is Crazy has not missed the money over 660 yet, and even without the early lead, she will be too close too soon not to get up for the win. Rc Mini Power should set the pace once again, especially from the rail post, but holding on will be tricky for her with all the big time late speeders coming after her in the stretch. Pat C Hold Out just missed last time out from well off the pace and should give another strong late driving effort, and let's not forget the ULTRA closer Wannadobadthings. You never know what he is going to do and he has more late speed than anyone else at the racetrack. He won last time out as he came out fairly close early. If he wants a shot at repeating, he needs to decide early on if he wants to be in the race or not. (4-1-8-6)
Resurging veteran 660 monster, Ww's Gucci, looks to put together back to back winning efforts in the 11th race on the card. From another good outside post position, she should be able to get into the conversation early and find a way to get up at the finish line for the win. This will be another tough effort, but she has the skills to get it done. Closers Lk's Gran Slam and Diamond Tears will be doing their best late to try and make Gucci work for it. Both have the late speed to take down everyone else for the upset, but they have to break better if they want a chance to get up in the winner's circle first. Everyone will have to catch Flying Glenda on the lead if they want the victory. Glenda is the best breaker in the bunch and she gets another great rail post position to start out this race from. She is short late and can be caught from behind, but if she gets some help early, she might be able to last to the wire for the upset tonight. (8-7-3-2)
Saving the best for last, the 15th race is going to be a barn burner to watch. Loads of talent lines these boxes, including 6 winners in the stakes, 6 greyhounds with perfect in the money records in the stakes, and our only undefeated greyhound remaining, Snj Black Porter. Talk about a mini final during the rounds, you could come no closer than this race. Snj Black Porter clearly is the one to beat in this effort. Porter has won both rounds for fun and posted up the quickest time of the night in round 2. He is powerful from the box and can beat you with or without the early lead in any race. He won't mind the 5 box, as long as he breaks, and if he sees the lead, this race will be over. J's Robin is as fast as she want to be and has thrived over both 550 and 660 yards in her young career. She has never missed the quiniela in 7 official starts and that includes 5 impressive wins. Her last effort in the stakes was a determined win after trouble. Look for her to keep up the pace and threaten throughout once again tonight. Lk's Merrel gets the post position nod and will continue his red hot running over 660 yards at the Orange Park Kennel Club. He has been in the cash in 4 straight and has won 2 in impressive fashion. He loves this rail post and took home a win in round 1 from the very same red box that he has tonight. He will need to break well again if he wants to contend, but closing is not a problem for him either. Against this tough field, he must step up his game in this effort. Now for the sentimental pick, Really Gonnarock. Gonnarock was probably the best 660 greyhound for the 2011 campaign, but has not returned to her tip top form as of late. She has been a threat in almost all of her races, she just has not been able to reel off the wins like she has in the past. She still is a threat in any start, and with the wide post tonight, she might just find some of that old magic. If she clears close, she will factor throughout for the win. (5-7-1-8)
Semi-Finals for the 2012 Orange Park Derby will run on Monday January 30th at the Orange Park Kennel Club.
