Greyhound racing used to be almost strictly a “man’s world,” but there were some grande dames who courageously pioneered their cause and broke the gender barrier over the course of time. One of these ladies was already a leading kennel owner four decades back, shown here in the ‘70s with perhaps the best of her charges from an incredible litter.
If you’re among the first five respondents who can identify her and her greyhound, your name will be in a Jan. 1, 2012, drawing for a free, autographed copy of Paul C. Hartwell’s history of the sport, The Road from Emeryville.
The correct answer to last issue’s photo-at-the-finish on p. 63 is Suzy Kolber, who once co-starred in greyhound racing’s video program, called “TrackSide.” Suzy went on to become much more visible in the world of sports as one of the original anchors of ESPN2 when it launched in 1993. Her face still shows up frequently on TV sports today, as an ESPN football sideline reporter, co-producer and broadcaster.
Correctly ID’ing Ms. Kolber and winning the autographed The Road From Emeryville was Steve Caruso of Lynn Haven, Fl.
