West Palm Beach, Fl. - Round one qualifying action for the $50,000 He’s My Man Classic gets underway Wednesday afternoon, January 4, at Palm Beach Kennel Club.
An impressive field of 64 Greyhounds will go to post Wednesday afternoon in eight qualifying events to be run on the 545-yard Royal Palm Course. The same 64 competitors will return for round two Saturday afternoon, January 7.
Following the second round, the field will be trimmed to 32, and they will go on the compete in the third round Wednesday afternoon, January 11. The field will then be halved to 16 for the semifinals on Sunday afternoon, January 15.
The final eight will comprise the field for the $50,000 He’s My Man Classic which will be contested Saturday afternoon, January 21.
I must say, that on paper, it appears that Rader Racing Kennel will have the wagering favorites in most - if not all - of the eight qualifying races.
In Race 2, veteran stakes competitor #2 Custom Trent (Trent Lee - Gifted Whistler, Rader Racing) looks to be the one to catch.
In Race 4, the wagering favorite will be the impressive #8 Alarm Red Nose (Dodgem By Design - PNJ’s Cupid, Rader Racing). This perfectly set up youngster will be going for his fourth consecutive victory. Possible challenges may come from super-early speedster #3 Be Giving (Dragon Fire - Nenagh, Steve Gilster Kennel) and last month’s $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity finalist #1 SE’s Star Leia (TNT Star Wars - Ozsum Flyby, Arthur Agganis Kennel)
Race 6 features the defending $50,000 He’s My Man Classic champion, #3 Tuff Stuff (Lonesome Cry - Night Breeze, Rader Racing). This handsome guy is definitely back in form and will be going for his fourth straight win.
In Race 8, Norm Rader mania continues with the well-rested #2 What’s Next (Yahoo Omar - Flying Exorcist). Who can catch the probable pacesetter? Two possibilities lay in the well-posted #1 Night Utah (Dragon Fire - TDM Sadie, Marsella Racing Kennel) and the veteran of veteran stakes finalist, the well respected and loved #5 JS I Am Legend (B’s O’Grady - Bizzy Babe, Collins / Neola Joe Kennel).
Race 10 will feature the 2011 $20,000 Bob Balfe Puppy Stakes champ #5 RK’s Conk Gonk (Dragon Fire - RK’s Tomb Raider, Rader Racing), who seems to have retrieved his patented super rush to the first turn.
Race 12 will be a much anticipated showdown between last month’s $20,000 Dick Andrews Futurity champ #3 Ethereal Moment (Rhythmless - PTL Lois, Royal Racing Team) and #5 Monkeys Uncle (Yahoo Omar - Flying Exorcist, Rader Racing). But don’t overlook #1 Pat C Offkey (Kiowa Sweet Trey - Okie Reba, Collins / Neola Joe Kennel) who is looking good breaking from her favorite post.
Race 14 may be Rader Racing Kennel’s toughest one to win. The probable wagering favorite looks to be #2 Riverview Stevie (Kiowa Sweet Trey - CV’s Mama Mia, Rader Racing), who will be going for his fifth win in a row. Possible spoilers include the strong rail-running #1 Go Bon Backtalk (Kiowa Sweet Trey - Flying Pawnee, B & B Racing Kennel), super pup #3 No Inflation (EA’s Itzaboy - JJ Johnson, Marsella Racing Kennel) and the 545-yard Royal Palm Course track record holder, #5 Atascocita Bowl (Dodgem By Design - Atascocita Sally, Suncoast Kennel).
Race 15 stars the hottest Greyhound racing at Palm Beach Kennel Club, #7 Turbo Razor (Kiowa Sweet Trey - Turbo Wind Blown, Rader Racing). This incredible athlete will attempt to attain his thirteenth consecutive victory. The only challengers that may be a thorn in his side are two other early fleet-footed Classic entries, #4 Pat C Whereby (DK’s Prime Time - Pat C Whereon, Collins / Neola Joe Kennel) and #5 Flying Halladay (Kiowa Sweet Trey - First Hand Smoke, Steve Gilster Kennel).
It’s going to be an incredible first round!
The $50,000 He’s My Man Classic is the first event in Palm Beach Kennel Club’s $150,000 “Big 3" Stakes series, which includes the $50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Mile Derby (Saturday afternoon, February 25) and the $50,000 Arthur J. Rooney, Sr. St. Patrick’s Invitational (Saturday afternoon, March 17).
The Classic is named for Palm Beach Kennel Club racing legend and the track’s first multimedia sensation He’s My Man and dedicated to the man who raised and trained “Roscoe”, Bill Pappas.
