Lashmet Rules in Round 1

Talk about taking over early on, the Lashmet Kennel showed everyone at the racetrack that they are going to be the ones to beat in the 2012 Orange Park Derby. Why? Because they not only won 4 of the 7 stakes races on the card, they did it in extreme fashion.

Most impressive was Lk's Mystifier who dominated the 14th race from the get go. She exploded out of the box and races off alone to score a 9 length victory over her kennelmate Lk's Gran Slam at the finish line.

The other winner didn't let the kennel down either. Lk's Energizing won the 15th race by stealing a lead and holding on by a nose over the hard closing upstart from DQ, J's Robin. Lk's Merrell broke close in the 5th race and turned on the jets late to leave the field by almost 5 lengths at the finish line. A similar effort came from Raiders Pharaoh in the 4th race. There he stormed to the early lead and increased his margin throughout as he crossed almost 5 lengths better than the rest.

The other winners might have made a statement of their own too. The fastest race on the card didn't come from a Lashmet greyhound, it came from a O'Donnell greyhound. Kiowa Jill Boom, lowered the Boom on her field as she jumped to the early lead and took instant command of the 7th race. She coasted home for the easy victory and a speedy time of 37.61 seconds.

Another pre-race favorite didn't disappoint either as Jacksonville Juvenile winner, Snj Black Porter, showed up to run in race 11. Granted he didn't get the early lead in this race, but he didn't give up and ran a monster effort to win. Early he was cut off by the leader, swung way wide, and still found a way to get back into the race. Catching the leader by the far turn, he took command and that was the last they were going to see of him. He put on a clinic late and left the field in his lurch. Crossing almost 8 lengths better than the rest, Porter looks like he might have a shot at back to back titles.

The other winner was no slouch either. Pat C Manuel found his break and that was bad news for the field in the 9th race on the card. Clearing early from the outside, Manuel was in complete control from the start and from that point on, it looked easy. He increased his lead early to 3, then 5 lengths, and coasted home for the easy victory. Posting up the second fastest time of the night, Manuel might be the sleeper in the stakes that everyone better look out for.

Second round action takes place on Monday January 23rd at the Orange Park Kennel Club. All 7 races return, so get ready for some more great racing in round number 2.
