Field set for Matinee Idol Stakes

Upsets were seen in Wednesday matinee's Matinee Idol qualifying rounds. The Jan. 25 heats were featured in races six and ten. The top four finishers from each heat earned their slot in the Saturday afternoon race on Jan. 28. Campbell Greyhound Racing's Spry Kimbrel was a major upset in the first heat. The race six winner paid $70.60 for his win. Kimbrel snatched the win away from Red Oak Racing's Meacham Field at the wire. The bet favorite Tiger Boy (McAllister) finished third with Patriot kennel's Sing In The Rain filling the last slot from the first heat. Hi Noon Rogue (Nova), Deanos Joy (Lester Raines), Gabby's Jentowin (Albama) and HAG Andante (Alderson) finished fifth through eighth.

Race ten saw HWJ Isabelle (Hambleton) pay $14.60 to win over the betting favorite TMC's Pistol that finished third. D'Arcy kennel's Nefarious came off the pace to place and earn a slot in the final. Pistol won the photo for third for O'Donnell and Abernathy kennel will get a chance to defend their title in the stakes with AHK Remember Me filling the final slot. Last year RK's Big Bear won for trainer Kayruth Abernathy. Jack's Shortfuse (Holland), Jim Mercedes (Patriot), El Uptown Gal (Nova) and M's Free Agent (Floyd & Porter) were eliminated. The post positions for the stakes race will be drawn Thursday night and posted on Vera's News.

Other news: McAllister kennel's Flying Austin struck Gold when he halted the win streak of Gottcha Gold (Raines) in race 12 of the matinee. Gottcha Gold was on course for an undefeated run to the top of the graded ladder. Gold took early control and was unable to hold off the strides of Flying Austin who tarnished Gold's record. Flying Austin paid $26.40 to win.
