Here are some interesting horse-racing statistics from last month, as recently carried in the Daily Racing Form.
Compared with last November (2010), handle declined 3.5 percent for the month (down to $874.4 million), while number of race days increased by 4.5 percent (392 this November). Increase in race days occurred despite a general trend to cut back on race cards in order to counteract a decline in the foal crop and maintain field sizes of about eight horses per race.
Purses jumped 6.7 percent this November (up to $101.9 million). Racing Form points out that purses at racetracks are heavily subsidized by slot machine revenue.
For the year, handle is down 7.1 percent, race days are down 4 percent, and purses are up 1.68 percent.
