Dubuque Greyhound Park ran its 2011 $45,000 Future Star Stakes, Saturday Evening, October 1st. This stakes event started off with 48 greyhounds that were whelped March 2009, or later, and had won their first official race at Dubuque Greyhound Park this meet. Sweetcorn City Kennel, trained by Bob Rider, had an impressive showing making it into the finals with four greyhounds that were all littermates, Mamas Special Ed, Mamas Lady Gaga, Mamas Pastorjoel, and Mamas Gary Lam, all owned by Stephen E. Lockwood. Mamas Special Ed, the star of the four, had won all three rounds to get into the finals and looked to be the favorite to win. But no one told that to Hug N Dodgem, of the Blanchard-Calabro Kennel, who was posted in the 8 hole. As the race went off Hug N Dodgem did not break out on top but drove around the trouble in the first turn and held off the challenges to win the $45,000 Future Star Stakes. Mama’s Special Ed ran into some trouble in the first turn but came on in the far turn to take second. Boc’s Blast Off of the Boeckenstedt Kennel broke out slowly and worked his way through traffic to take third and O Ya Rose of the Clayton Black Kennel lead early but faded to take fourth place.
